COP27: Presidency informal document misses out India's points on phasing down all fossil fuels, deeply regrets gaps in rich nations' efforts
SHARM EL- SHEIKH: With the climate talks (COP27) entering final hours of negotiations, the Egyptian presidency on Thursday released a 'non-paper' covering various elements that may pave the way for a final 'cover text' decision of this round of the UN conference. The document has, however, missed out India's points on phasing down all fossil fuels instead of just singling out coal, but included the country's pitch on sustainable lifestyle and also its reference that the rich nations should attain net zero emission by 2030.
The 20-page 'non-paper', a compilation of various views of the countries that have been raised during the past 11 days, reiterates the Glasgow coal "phase down" point. It also includes the 1.5 degree C target as mentioned in the Paris Agreement, encouraging (not compelling) rich nations to increase their financial support and align funding flows with the mitigation goals, references of doubling of adaptation finance to $40 billion a year by 2025 and welcoming the agenda item on loss and damage fund.
